| Descrizione del dritto |
The obverse features a centrally placed circular hole surrounded by the denomination legend "ONE PENNY" inscribed in a curved band, flanked by decorative foliate scroll ornaments. Surmounting the hole at the top of the inner field is an imperial crown in high relief. The bilingual peripheral legend reads "EDWARDVS VIII REX ET IND: IMP:" in Latin along the upper arc, with the Arabic script equivalent "وَاحِد پَنّي" inscribed in the lower field below the central hole. The coin's milled border runs continuously around the perimeter. The overall design is typographically bold, with no royal effigy, reflecting the unique aniconic convention adopted for British West African coinage. |

The reverse is a plain field bearing the territorial name and date of issue. The legend "BRITISH WEST AFRICA" is inscribed in a curved arc along the upper portion of the coin, and the date "1936" appears in the lower field, all within the milled border. The mint mark, when present, appears in small relief immediately below the central hole on the obverse side. The reverse design is intentionally spare, serving primarily as an administrative identifier for the issuing authority's territory. |
