| Obverse description | The obverse features a centrally placed circular hole surrounded by the denomination legend "ONE PENNY" inscribed in a curved band, flanked by decorative foliate scroll ornaments. Surmounting the hole at the top of the inner field is an imperial crown in high relief. The bilingual peripheral legend reads "EDWARDVS VIII REX ET IND: IMP:" in Latin along the upper arc, with the Arabic script equivalent "وَاحِد پَنّي" inscribed in the lower field below the central hole. The coin's milled border runs continuously around the perimeter. The overall design is typographically bold, with no royal effigy, reflecting the unique aniconic convention adopted for British West African coinage. |
