Reverse description A quartered royal shield of arms superimposed upon a full-length plain cross that extends to the coin's beaded inner circle, dividing the field into four quarters. The shield bears the arms of England (three passant guardant lions) in the first and fourth quarters, and the arms of France (fleurs-de-lis) in the second and third quarters, consistent with the Tudor royal heraldic tradition. The shield is rendered in a bold, if somewhat roughly executed, die-engraved style reflecting provincial Bristol mint production. The surrounding legend identifies the Bristol mint, with the text divided by the limbs of the cross.
