Class 10cf2 falls within the final phase of Edward I's extensive penny recoinage program, which had been running since 1279. By 1306–1307, the king was in Scotland conducting what would prove to be his last campaign against Robert the Bruce — he died at Burgh by Sands in July 1307 before crossing the border. Coins of this precise sub-class are distinguished by specific letter forms and crown details that occupied the scholarship of L.A. Lawrence for decades, with the full classification not settled until well into the twentieth century.
North 1041 covers a narrow window of production, making clean attributions to this sub-class harder than the broader class designations suggest.
