Edward I's Irish coinage reform of 1279 was part of the same sweeping recoinage that restructured the English monetary system — but Ireland was administered separately, with Dublin operating as the primary mint alongside a brief activation of mints at Cork and Waterford. The Class I pennies represent the opening phase of this reform, issued before tighter die standardization tightened the fabric of later classes.
The Dublin mint's output was chronically insufficient for Irish commercial demand throughout this period, a gap filled by imported English coin and outright counterfeiting.
