Beschrijving keerzijde A cross fleury occupies the centre of the field, with a lozenge or quadrilateral form at its intersection, creating the distinctive voided cross design associated with Period A coinage of David I. The cross extends to the inner beaded circle, dividing the field into four quarters. The moneyer's legend surrounds the design, identifying the moneyer Erebald operating at the Carlisle mint. The overall composition is typical of Anglo-Norman penny design conventions adopted in early Scottish regal coinage.

Aanvullende informatie

David I introduced a Scottish royal coinage during the 1130s, drawing heavily on Anglo-Norman minting practices he had absorbed during years spent at the English court — he had been Earl of Huntingdon before ascending the Scottish throne in 1124. The coins were struck by moneyers operating under royal license, a system borrowed directly from Henry I's England, and several of those moneyers are known by name from surviving examples.

Period A issues predate the civil war of Stephen's reign that would later flood southern Scotland with irregular English coinage, complicating attribution of finds from border sites to this day.
