Obverse description Crowned bust of King Stephen facing right, holding a sceptre in the right field. The effigy is rendered in a crude but characteristic medieval hammered style, with a beaded inner circle surrounding the central design. The circumferential legend, partially legible on this heavily worn flan, reads + STEFINE REX, identifying the king. The overall style is consistent with Period A coinage struck during David I's reign in the Carlisle mint under English-influenced die cutters.
