Obverse description The central device depicts the colonial arms of Queensland, featuring a quartered shield with a rampant bull, a sheaf of wheat, a ship under sail, and a fleece, surmounted by a radiant sun. The shield is supported by an emu to the left and a kangaroo to the right, both facing inward toward the arms. A scroll beneath bears the motto ADVANCE AUSTRALIA. The outer legend QUEENSLAND arcs across the upper field, with the date 1863 inscribed at the base, all within a beaded border.

Reverse description The reverse is an entirely typographic design with no pictorial device. The circular legend QUEENSLAND STORES arcs across the upper field, and D.T. MULLIGAN curves along the lower periphery, all within a beaded border. The word ROCKHAMPTON is prominently struck in large raised letters across the center of the plain field, identifying the place of issue of this tradesman's token.
