Gibraltar's penny coinage is issued under Royal Mint licensing arrangements but struck separately from UK circulation issues, giving the territory latitude to mark events like the May 2023 coronation on denominations that no longer exist in British pockets — the UK penny survives only as legal tender, rarely seen in change. Charles's coronation was the first in seventy years, the last equipment and ceremonial protocols having been substantially improvised from 1953 records.
