Charles II's first coinage after the Restoration was hammered by necessity, not preference — the machinery for milled coinage existed but was tied up in political disputes with the Moneyers, who fiercely resisted mechanization to protect their guild livelihoods. Hammered silver continued under royal warrant while negotiations dragged on, making this issue a direct product of that labor conflict rather than any technical limitation.
Production ended abruptly in 1662 when the milled coinage finally prevailed. Hammered pieces were called in and demonetized shortly after, which is why survivors in any condition are genuinely scarce.
