Obverse description Central field bears the abbreviated merchant's name arranged in two lines reading J. CARO and & CO., enclosed within a plain inner circle. The surrounding legend GENERAL IRONMONGERS HIGH STREET CHRISTCHURCH runs along the periphery in upright Latin lettering, separated by stops. The entire design is framed by a beaded border, consistent with mid-Victorian provincial trade token engraving practice.

Reverse description A standing blindfolded male figure occupies the central field, striding to the left while pushing a plough with both hands, symbolising agricultural labour. The allegorical composition alludes to the dual themes of commerce and farming central to Canterbury province's economy. The circular legend TRADE AND AGRICULTURE is divided to either side of the figure in upright Latin capitals. The design is contained within a beaded border, characteristic of New Zealand provincial copper trade tokens of the 1850s–1870s.
