Obverse description Facing crowned bust of King Alexander III in high relief, rendered in the bold, somewhat stylised manner characteristic of late 13th-century Scottish hammered coinage. The king wears a simple crown with fleurs-de-lis and is depicted with a frontal face showing schematic facial features. A beaded inner circle surrounds the portrait, with the peripheral legend ALEXANDER DEI GRA inscribed in uncial characters between the inner and outer borders of the flan.
