Obverse description Facing crowned bust of King Alexander III in high relief, rendered in the bold, somewhat stylised manner characteristic of late 13th-century Scottish hammered coinage. The king wears a simple crown with fleurs-de-lis and is depicted with a frontal face showing schematic facial features. A beaded inner circle surrounds the portrait, with the peripheral legend ALEXANDER DEI GRA inscribed in uncial characters between the inner and outer borders of the flan.

Reverse description Long voided cross extending to the edge of the coin, dividing the reverse field into four quadrants, each containing three six-pointed mullets (stars) arranged in a triangular pattern around a central pellet — a design diagnostic of the Class Ma coinage. A beaded inner circle frames the cross, and the peripheral legend REX SCOTORVM is inscribed in uncial characters between the inner and outer borders of the flan.
