Obverse description The central field displays a serrated or toothed wreath encircling three lines of text in mixed typefaces: the initial 'D' rendered in elegant cursive script at the top, the word 'CHURCH' in bold Roman capitals at center, and the word 'Penny' in flowing cursive script below. The wreath border is composed of pointed foliate elements arranged radially around the legend, giving the token a distinctive decorative frame. This piece exists in two varieties: one bearing the initial 'D' (PCGS#610) and one without it (PCGS#612). The overall design is simple and utilitarian, consistent with late 18th-century American merchant or church token production.
