| Obverse description | The obverse is entirely typographic in design, with no pictorial elements. The merchant's name A. G. HODGSON appears prominently in large raised letters across the centre of the field, below which the trade designation OUTFITTER and the abbreviation &c are inscribed in two lines. The peripheral legend MELBOURNE curves along the upper rim, while 13 LONSDALE ST. WEST arcs along the lower rim, all within a fine milled border. A small decorative ornament appears above the central text. |

| Reverse description | The reverse depicts two Australian native fauna facing one another in the centre of the field: an emu standing to the left and a kangaroo rearing to the right, both rendered in fine relief against a naturalistic ground of grasses and low vegetation. The legend VICTORIA curves along the upper rim, while the date 1862 is inscribed in the lower exergual area. A fine milled border surrounds the design, and a maker's inscription referencing the engraver or die-maker appears in small lettering along the lower ground line. |
