Obverse description Central field occupied by a large Gothic letter W rendered in bold relief, its three prongs clearly defined and framed by a continuous inner ring of raised pellets encircling the letter. The design is uniface, struck as a bracteate on a thin hammered flan. The pellet border follows the irregular outline of the planchet, typical of medieval Gotlandic penny coinage from Visby.

Additional information

Visby's municipal coinage operated largely independently of Swedish royal authority throughout the medieval period, a privilege the city jealously guarded as a dominant Hanseatic entrepôt controlling Baltic trade routes. The penning denomination at this weight was the base unit of local reckoning, and the absence of distinguishing symbols on this type — as opposed to the marked varieties cataloged by Hauberg — likely reflects a specific phase of the mint's output rather than a degraded or anonymous issue.
