Beschrijving voorzijde Central field dominated by a stylized tower or gate motif rendered in a crosshatched or reticulated pattern, characteristic of early medieval Gotlandic bracteate-influenced coinage. The design is contained within a rudimentary frame or lintel above, suggesting an architectural façade. A partial letter or symbol appears to the right of the central device, possibly a mint mark or abbreviated inscription. The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, consistent with hand-cut hammered production of the 12th century. The field surrounding the device is flat and largely plain.

Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse displays a schematic facing head or mask in low relief, with globular pellet elements suggesting eyes and a mouth, framed by crude linear features indicative of a crown or helmet. Diagonal lines radiating from the central motif may represent a cross or stylized crown. The design is weakly struck and partially off-centre, typical of the variable die alignment and irregular flan preparation of 12th-century Visby penny coinage. The surrounding field is flat and largely featureless. No legible legend is present.

Aanvullende informatie

Visby's early bracteate penningar predate the town's formal Hanseatic prominence, struck when the island of Gotland functioned as the dominant entrepôt of Baltic trade — a role it would begin losing to Lübeck within a generation. The Swedish royal crown held no minting authority here; these coins were issued under the town's own jurisdiction, an unusual autonomy for a community of this size and period.

The weight of surviving examples varies considerably within the type, suggesting production without strict metrological control — consistent with a merchant community prioritizing exchange convenience over standardization.
