Visby's early bracteate penningar predate the town's formal Hanseatic prominence, struck when the island of Gotland functioned as the dominant entrepôt of Baltic trade — a role it would begin losing to Lübeck within a generation. The Swedish royal crown held no minting authority here; these coins were issued under the town's own jurisdiction, an unusual autonomy for a community of this size and period.
