Additional information

Sverre Sigurdsson seized the Norwegian throne through civil war, defeating and killing King Magnus Erlingsson at the Battle of Fimreite in 1184 — the first naval battle recorded in Norwegian history. His claim rested on alleged illegitimate birth to King Sigurd Munn, a genealogy his enemies and the Church openly contested. Pope Innocent III eventually placed Norway under interdict during Sverre's reign, a censure Sverre defied until his death in 1202.

Skaare 119 is among the thinner, more irregularly flan'd issues of his coinage, reflecting the strained minting infrastructure of a kingdom at near-continuous war for two decades.
