Obverse description Hammered silver penning struck during the reign of Sven Estridsen. The obverse depicts a stylized eagle facing forward with wings spread, rendered in the Romanesque manner characteristic of mid-eleventh-century Danish coinage. A bold cross with beaded ornamentation occupies the central field, flanked by the outstretched wings of the bird. Pseudo-runic or debased Latin letters form a circular legend around the periphery. The overall design is executed in a flat, schematic style typical of Viking-age and early medieval Scandinavian hammered coinage.
