Olav Haraldsson's coinage is among the earliest struck on Norwegian soil, and its very existence reflects a deliberate political act: Olav modeled his penny directly on the English pennies of Æthelred II, whose court he had spent time at and whose monetary infrastructure he sought to emulate. The dependency on English dies and possibly English moneyers is visible in surviving specimens.
