Magnus Barefoot — named for his habit of wearing Scottish Highland dress after his campaigns there — ruled Norway from 1093 until his death in an Irish ambush in 1103. His penning coinage is among the crudest of the medieval Norwegian series, struck by hammering on irregular flans with dies that were frequently misaligned or off-center. Skaare 50 represents a type with exceptionally low surviving numbers; most examples that do appear show significant flan cracks from the brittleness of the silver alloy used.
