Håkon V moved the Norwegian capital from Bergen to Oslo in 1299, the same year his reign — and this coinage — began. The penning was already a diminished denomination by this point, centuries of debasement having reduced what Carolingian-era pennies once represented to thin, bracteate-influenced wafers of modest silver content. Skaare 257 is among the smallest and most poorly preserved Norwegian medieval coin types encountered in the trade, surviving examples typically coming from hoards rather than single finds.
