Below the central device, two small heraldic lions or beast figures are rendered in low relief flanking the base of the central motif, a hallmark of Håkon V's coinage. The surrounding field is plain, and the outer border consists of a beaded circle surmounted by radiating leaf or wedge ornaments. The legend MONETA OSLO, identifying the Oslo Mint, is inscribed in uncial Latin characters around the periphery. The overall strike is characteristic of hammered medieval pennings produced at Oslo during the early 14th century. |
