Beschrijving voorzijde Central device consisting of two crossed battle-axes superimposed upon a cross, the emblems of Saint Olav, patron saint of Norway and symbol of the Archbishopric of Nidaros. The design is rendered in bold relief characteristic of late medieval Norwegian hammered coinage. The entire central motif is enclosed within a beaded or rayed inner border, beyond which a radiating ray garland extends to the irregularly shaped coin flan.

Aanvullende informatie

Gaute Ivarsson served as Archbishop of Nidaros from 1474 until his death in 1510, making him one of the longest-tenured holders of that see in the late medieval period. The Archbishopric held considerable autonomous authority in this era, including the right to strike coin — a privilege that set Nidaros apart from most Norwegian ecclesiastical institutions. These small silver pennings circulated primarily in the northern reaches of the kingdom, where the Archbishop's temporal power was, in practical terms, more immediate than the Danish crown's.
