Obverse description Central device consisting of two crossed battle-axes superimposed upon a cross, the emblems of Saint Olav, patron saint of Norway and symbol of the Archbishopric of Nidaros. The design is rendered in bold relief characteristic of late medieval Norwegian hammered coinage. The entire central motif is enclosed within a beaded or rayed inner border, beyond which a radiating ray garland extends to the irregularly shaped coin flan.
