Produced during the reign of Olaf Kyrre, Norway's longest-ruling medieval king, this anonymous penning belongs to a coinage tradition deliberately stripped of royal identification — a practice common in Scandinavian minting when royal authority over coinage was still being consolidated against the competing interests of bishops and local moneyers.
