Struck under Harald Hardrada's successor Olaf Kyrre, this penny belongs to a coinage period when Norwegian silver issues were closely modeled on contemporary Anglo-Saxon types — a direct consequence of the extensive cross-North Sea traffic in coin that preceded the Norman Conquest. Olaf's long, stable reign of nearly three decades allowed for unusually consistent output by Scandinavian standards of the period.
