Struck in the name of Philip II but issued by the rebellious States of Brabant during the early phase of the Dutch Revolt, this coin reflects the peculiar political moment of 1577 — when the States-General, having expelled the Spanish troops following the Pacification of Ghent, briefly governed in uneasy parallel with the nominal authority of Philip's new governor-general, Don John of Austria. The "des États" designation distinguishes this issue from royalist Brabant coinage struck under direct Habsburg control.
