Philip the Handsome inherited Brabant as part of the Burgundian Netherlands in 1482, when he was just four years old, with his aunt Maximilian of Austria holding regency. The Briquet type — named for the fire-steel flint strike device associated with the Order of the Golden Fleece — was among the first coinage Philip issued in his own right once he assumed control of the duchy. The billon finesse of roughly 40% silver placed these firmly in the working currency of the Low Countries market towns rather than in any prestige register.
The Antwerp mint dominated production of this type, consistent with that city's position as the commercial engine of the Burgundian Netherlands in the 1490s.
