Obverse description A crowned rampant lion facing left dominates the central field, its forepaws grasping a quartered shield bearing the complex arms of Austria-Burgundy, comprising the heraldic devices of Austria, Burgundy, Brabant, and related territories rendered in fine relief. The lion's crown and mane are boldly struck, conveying the dynastic authority of Philip the Handsome. The armorial shield is rendered with considerable detail typical of late-medieval Burgundian coinage. A beaded inner circle frames the central device, with the titular Latin legend disposed in uncial characters around the periphery.
