Beschrijving voorzijde Draped bust of Jean-Louis d'Elderen facing right, wearing a clerical collar and curled periwig rendered in the late Baroque style. The effigy occupies the central field with considerable relief, showing fine detail in the lace neckwear and flowing wig. A circular Latin legend surrounds the bust, separated from the inner field by a beaded inner border. The portrait conveys the ecclesiastical authority of the Prince-Bishop with dignified realism characteristic of late 17th-century Low Countries coinage.

Beschrijving keerzijde Quartered coat of arms of the Prince-Bishopric of Liège, surmounted by an elaborate ducal coronet with five visible globes, centrally positioned in the field. The shield displays the multiple quarterings associated with the territorial titles of Jean-Louis d'Elderen, including the arms of the Bishopric of Liège, Bouillon, Looz, and Hornes. The date appears integrated within the surrounding Latin legend. A beaded inner border frames the design, consistent with the milled production technique of the period.

Aanvullende informatie

Jean-Louis d'Elderen was elected Prince-Bishop of Liège in 1688 at the age of seventy-six, making his episcopate one of the shortest and least consequential in the principality's history — he died in 1694 after just six years. The patagon type itself was a denomination inherited from the Spanish Netherlands, still struck by Liège's ecclesiastical mint by convention long after the Spanish grip on the region had loosened.

The Dengis reference for Liège coinage remains the specialist's primary tool for attributing these episcopal issues, and the tight date window here reflects d'Elderen's brief tenure rather than any minting interruption.
