By 1832, the Karamanli dynasty that had governed Tripoli as an autonomous regency for over a century was in its death throes — Yusuf Karamanli's treasury was exhausted, his sons were fighting over succession, and Ottoman reassertion was imminent. Copper issues of this period were struck under increasingly chaotic administrative conditions, which accounts for the wide variation in flan preparation and strike quality seen across surviving specimens. The Ottomans reasserted direct control in 1835, ending the regency entirely and rendering these final Karamanli-era coppers the last autonomous coinage struck in Tripoli for decades.
