The word 'Sultan' (سلطان) appears in the upper portion, with the Hijri regnal year 1223 inscribed below in Arabic numerals. The lettering is characteristic of the informal, hand-engraved style typical of Ottoman provincial mint production in Tripolitania, with uneven depth of strike across the irregular planchet.
