Additional information

Tripoli's copper coinage under Mahmud II was issued by the Karamanli dynasty, which had governed the regency in semi-autonomy from Istanbul since 1711 — one of the few Ottoman provincial dynasties to have extracted near-independent status through a combination of piracy revenue and shrewd diplomatic maneuvering. By 1808, the dynasty was well past its peak; internal succession disputes and declining corsair income had eroded Karamanli authority considerably. KM#93 is among the more obscure Ottoman provincial copper types, produced for local circulation rather than any broader imperial monetary system.
