Obverse description Within a beaded border, a crowned and ornately decorated cartouche bearing the quartered arms of the Cybo and Medici families — the combined Samnite shield of the ruling house — occupies the central field. The date 1567 is divided and placed on either side of the cartouche. A circular Latin legend surrounds the entire composition, recording the titles and domains of Duke Alberico I Cybo-Malaspina.

Reverse description Within a beaded border, Saint Peter is depicted standing facing, unhaloed, holding a large key in his right hand and a book in his left hand, rendered in the flat linear style characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century Italian hammered coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounding the figure identifies the patron saint and the mint city of Massa.
