Obverse description Within a central circle, two crossed khukris (curved Nepalese knives) are depicted right over left in fine style. Surrounding the circle, a Devanagari legend reads 'Shree 5 Tribhuvan Veer Vikram Shahdev', with the Vikrama Samvat date appearing below. Additional information

Tribhuvan came to the throne in 1911 at age five, leaving real authority firmly in the hands of the Rana prime ministers who had dominated Nepal since Jung Bahadur's coup of 1846. These small brass paisa issues circulated under that arrangement — the king's name on the coin, the Ranas running the country. Tribhuvan would eventually break that grip in 1950 by seeking asylum in the Indian embassy, but that was three decades off.
