The Sikh Empire's copper paisa coinage was produced under the Nanakshahi mint system, which tied monetary authority explicitly to the Gurus rather than to Ranjit Singh personally — an unusual arrangement that persisted even as the Maharaja consolidated near-absolute political control after 1799. The Lahore Durbar maintained this religious framing deliberately, distinguishing Sikh coinage from both Mughal and British issues circulating simultaneously in the Punjab.
