Sayaji Rao II ruled Baroda under British paramountcy, a period during which the East India Company was systematically pressuring princely states to harmonize their coinages with Company standards. Baroda resisted full monetary absorption longer than many neighboring Maratha successor states, continuing to strike its own copper paisa well into the 1840s.
