Additional information

Prithvi Bir Bikram Shah reigned under heavy Rana oligarchic control — the king held the throne in name while the Prime Minister Jung Bahadur Rana's successors exercised real power. These copper paisas were struck during a period when Nepal's monetary system remained deliberately isolated from British Indian coinage standardization, a policy the Rana regime maintained to preserve economic autonomy from the colonial administration on its southern border.
