Additional information

Prithvi Bir Bikram Shah came to the throne in 1881 at age five, ruling under a succession of regents dominated by the Rana prime ministers who held real power throughout his reign. This paisa was struck during the period when Jung Bahadur Rana's successors had thoroughly institutionalized that arrangement, reducing the Shah monarchy to a ceremonial function while managing Nepal's currency and trade relationships with British India largely on their own terms.
