Mahendra ascended the throne in 1955 following the death of Tribhuvan, who had only recently been restored to power after the overthrow of the Rana oligarchy in 1951. This paisa was struck in the first year of his reign, before his 1960 coup dissolved parliament and established the partyless Panchayat system that would define Nepal's political structure for three decades. The Schön 139.2 designation distinguishes this from earlier subtype strikes under the same KM number.
