Sambhaji, eldest son of Shivaji, had a turbulent relationship with the Maratha court — he defected briefly to the Mughals in 1678 before returning, and was only confirmed as successor shortly before Shivaji's death in 1680. Coinage attributed to his name within this date range almost certainly reflects issues struck under Shivaji's broader administrative apparatus rather than Sambhaji's independent authority, as his formal reign did not begin until 1681.
Sambhaji was captured by Aurangzeb's forces in 1689 and executed after refusing to convert to Islam — his reign lasting just nine years.
