Cambay — formally known as Khambhat — was a Gujarat sultanate-turned-Mughal dependency that retained nominal coinage rights under its own nawabs well into the eighteenth century. The date range assigned to this issue reflects genuine uncertainty rather than precision; the Cambay mint produced copper falus and paisa coinage without consistent regnal dating, leaving attribution dependent largely on calligraphic style and die analysis. Local copper issues from this period circulated alongside Mughal copper and frequently absorbed heavy wear from the busy textile and bead-trade economy for which the port was known.
