The Pahlavi gold coin series was institutionalized under Reza Shah in 1932 as part of a sweeping currency modernization that replaced the older Qiran-based system with the Rial. The 1 Pahlavi denomination anchored the gold coinage and continued under Mohammad Reza Shah through a period of extraordinary economic turbulence — nationalization of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company in 1951, the CIA-backed coup of 1953, and the oil boom revenues of the early 1970s that simultaneously flooded and distorted the Iranian economy.
Bank Melli Iran issued these consistently across more than two decades, making date-specific mintage figures the primary variable for collectors. The 1951 issues carry particular significance as the first struck under Mohammad Reza Shah's reconsolidated authority following Mossadegh's removal.
