Travancore maintained its own gold coinage well into the British Raj period, a privilege tolerated by colonial administrators who found the kingdom's fiscal management competent enough to leave largely undisturbed. Rama Varma IV ruled from 1880 to 1885, which places this 1877 issue under his predecessor — the attribution to Rama Varma IV in some references reflects the Kerala calendar conversion complications that have long troubled the cataloging of Travancore coinage.
KM#26 is among the lighter gold pagoda variants in the Travancore sequence, struck at the Trivandrum mint.
