The Alupas were a coastal dynasty based in the Tulu-speaking region of what is now coastal Karnataka, enduring as vassals across successive overlords — Kadambas, Gangas, Chalukyas, and eventually the Hoysalas — for well over a millennium. Dhananjaya Alupa, operating under Chalukya suzerainty, issued gold pagodas that drew on South Indian temple-currency traditions rather than any imperial Chalukya standard. The pagoda denomination itself was deeply tied to temple treasury systems along the Malabar and Coromandel coasts.
MSI #219 places this among a sparsely documented feudatory series. Surviving specimens are rare enough that die linkage studies across the type remain incomplete.
