Bhillama V founded the independent Yadava kingdom at Devagiri after decisively defeating the Hoysala king Ballala II around 1190, ending a period of Chalukya suzerainty that had constrained his predecessors for generations. The padmatanka denomination itself is rooted in the older Deccan gold coinage traditions, the name derived from the lotus motif that recurs across Yadava royal iconography. Devagiri — the hill fortress that would later fall to Alauddin Khalji in 1296 — was still at this point a newly consolidated power center.
