The HMS Beagle series issued by Tonga belongs to a broader wave of Pacific island commemoratives produced almost entirely for the collector market — Tonga itself had no historical connection to the Beagle's voyages. The ship's 1831–1836 expedition under FitzRoy, with Darwin aboard, never called at Tongatapu. These coins were legal tender in name only, a revenue mechanism common to small-nation minting programs of the 1990s and 2000s.
Taufa'ahau Tupou IV reigned from 1965 until his death in 2006, making this one of his final regal issues.
