| Obverse description | The oval flan, shaped in the form of a rugby ball, bears the royal coat of arms of Tonga centrally placed within a raised circular border. The shield displays the national emblems including the star of the Southern Cross and a crown, supported by two doves and flanked by furled flags, all surmounted by a royal crown above a scrolled motto ribbon. The legend KINGDOM OF TONGA arcs above in the upper field, while the date 1997 appears in the lower field below the circular border. A continuous beaded border runs near the outer rim of the oval field. |
