Additional information

The Free Lakota Bank, operated by the Oglala Lakota on the Pine Ridge Reservation, positioned itself explicitly outside the U.S. federal banking system, rejecting FDIC oversight and denominating accounts in silver and copper rather than dollars. These rounds were issued as a functional alternative currency — a deliberate assertion of economic separation from Washington rather than a collector product. Whether they circulated in any meaningful volume is doubtful, but the intent was transactional.
